CHRISTMAS PRESENT APPEAL 2009

- 22^nd November to 18^th December 2009 -

 The Salvation Army and Superdrug have once again joined forces to help thousands of children, families and older people across the nation have a happy Christmas through the charity’s annual Christmas Present Appeal.

Every year, The Salvation Army in centres and churches across the UK and Ireland collects new gifts and toys from the public for distribution to those who face the reality of having little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning. With the continued support of Superdug as the official national retail partner, the leading church and charity is positive it will be able to light up thousands of lives this Christmas.

 Superdrug, the UK’s second largest beauty and health retailer, was the main national retail partner for the appeal in 2008.

 Lt-Colonel Marion Drew, The Salvation Army’s Secretary for Communications said: “We are so grateful that Superdrug has decided to continue to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal once again. Over the years our partnership has brought joy to millions of people who would otherwise have had a bleak Christmas and this year we aim to continue this honoured tradition and try to ensure no-one goes without at Christmas.”

 Superdrug, with more than 900 stores nationwide, is perfectly placed on almost every high street to collect gifts on behalf of The Salvation Army.

 Officially launching on Sunday, 22^nd November and running until 18^th December, The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal invites members of the public to drop off a new toy or gift, for children, families and older people, to their nearest Superdrug store.

 Local Salvation Army Officers (leaders) and volunteers will ensure the donations of new gifts and toys received from the public are collected, wrapped and distributed in their local communities in time for Christmas. Gifts are distributed through Social Services, local groups, Salvation Army networks and via other charities.

-          Superdrug target men for gothic Halloween beauty –

 Superdrug is predicting that Halloween will give its stores a spooky sales bonanza as customers embrace the opportunity to take this autumn’s gothic beauty trends to the extreme.  But it’s not just women that the store predicts will be choosing black nail polish and sweeping eyelashes for their Halloween parties, it believes that male customers will be taking the chance to try a little man make-up for Ghoulish Glam.

 With macho cage fighter Alex Reid, Katie Price’s boyfriend, outed as a cross dresser, men wearing make-up is on the verge of entering the mainstream.  This combined with the season’s gothic cosmetic trend will see men opting for guy-lashes.  Superdrug will sell around 50,000 pairs of false lashes during Halloween week – with sales doubled compared to same time last year.  Brits now spend £10m a year on false lashes. The male grooming market is increasing faster than the women’s market as male consumers are becoming much more receptive to the idea of the grooming process from start to finish. Ladies have benefited from false lashes for over 60 years and it was only a matter of time before men jumped on the band wagon – after all why wouldn’t they want to put their best face forward.

 The retailer is embracing the Ghoulish glam trend by holding forty seven Pamper Parties at stores across the country this Thursday from 5pm (29th October).  Men and women can attend to receive make-overs with advice on how to apply false lashes.

 Gemma Mason, Superdrug pamper party organiser said: “We always knew women loved the chance to dress up for Halloween and try dramatic make-up and hair styles but this year we’re actively inviting men to join the Ghoulish Glam parties.  As well as the chance to book in for a make-over and learn how to recreate the look at home men can also get general grooming advice and, like women guests, get ten per cent off their beauty purchases on the night.  Men tend to have larger faces so our Beauty Specialists will be advising them that they can carry off some of our more dramatic designs such as peacock feathers and diamante detail.”

-         Superdrug reveals its predictions for the season’s best selling fragrances –

This Christmas Superdrug is expecting the sweet smell of success as Brits look for the best prices on the high street for their Christmas gifts.  Savvy seasonal shoppers who are prepared to shop around are visiting the fancy department stores to choose their gifts and then heading to Superdrug’s fragrance counters and picking up the same gift for less.

Superdrug estimates almost over a million bottles of fragrance will be sold between now and Christmas. Over £600m is spent on fragrance in the UK every year, with over 30 per cent of this being spent in the four weeks before Christmas.

Steve Jebson, Superdrug Commercial Director comments: “Fragrance is a massive part of our business especially in the run up to Christmas and with our value fragrances people can afford to buy something for everyone in the family. This year’s prediction of top selling fragrances has been interesting as we foresee customers buying more classic fragrances rather than new brands – maybe it’s a nostalgic thing.”
